5 bands that matter part one

disclaimer: these bands are listes in chrnonological order of domestic release. they are by no means the only bands that matter, but they are five. some get attention, some get the wrong kind of attention, some get no attention at all. this is just something i want to do from time to time.

the velvet underground - begging with the velvet undergroiund and nico, they consistently shot out changes and kept their music interesting and upwardly mobile in sound. "velvet underground velvet underground" is their best album sonically, "white light/white heat" is their most challenging.

pavement - steven malkmus and any project he's involved with will always get special consideration from me. some will tell you that this band singlhandedly started "indie-rock". i don't know about all that, but i know that between "slanted and enchanted" and "crooked rain crooked rain" they put out some of the best damn balls to the wall rock ever made.

karate - of all the guitar palyers int he world, some worse, some better, there is not one i enjoy listening to as much as geoof farina. "the bed is in the ocean" will blind you, "unsolved" will make you bob your head and "some boots" will make you remember that sometimes even passionate music can fall out of finger, lips, hands like an anvil out of the sky.

the white stripes - this band could save rock and roll. enough said.

interpol - i was tellling someone the other day that i put this band in te same category with motorcycle club and radiohead. not in sound, in musician style of life or something. i cna't put my finger on it, but fuck if "turn ont he bright lights" isn't one of the best wine and slow lovemaking records ever made.
