and i'm sure you know
that during those
years some of my finest
pieces were about you
some of the most
interesting things
i had to say only came
to me when i was
looking at you
or talking to you
or sitting quietly
beside you.

maybe some nights
are better to me
more lasting for me
in the long run
than they were for
the others in the room.
