what's left of kentucky

perhaps it only happens
in that particular way
on days like that one
spent leaning back
in hammocks and laughing
about nothing at all

perhaps it only occurs
when all the weeks
and years come together
just right and if we're
very very lucky we can
be paying attention
when it happens

or at least realize later
how good it was to be
alive just then.
