(what makes you) smile

often enough,
a subtle thing happens
and a smile stretches your face
to reach the moon
we're often so tangled
in our own ways
but when safety slows
and suddenness crowds us out,
wakes us from the west, a sunset
dreams of anything we need
and lets us try for something more
than the less that's out there:
we win the ones that matter.

and that's why watching you smile
makes more sense than all the textbooks
on earth.
